Set in 1974 only months after the start of the torturous reign of General Augusto Pinochet, in a rundown hotel in Canada, a of group of Chilean refugees who were placed together by chance, but become a family, as they struggle with the effects of fleeing their homeland. It highlights the strength and beauty that lives on even during trauma, and teaches us that joy and humor can be found even in the most difficult of times. The Refugee Hotel is a fictionalized story based on playwright Carmen Aguirre’s experiences arriving in Canada with her family after fleeing Chile during the military coup.
